Farmer, Ellikkala district, Karakalpakstan region. May 2016

“I:  If it was up to you, in addition to cotton what else would you have planted?

F: It doesn’t matter if it is up to me, or not… the land belongs to government, and whenever you plant something, it should be different things. If there is 50 hectares of land, 26 hectares has to be cotton. I looked after 31 hectares of land, separated it from bad lands, for next year’s cotton, it cannot be all cotton. Starting from this street next 10 hectares is cotton, no rice or other plantations. Many plant melons. Melon does not need much irrigation, but it won’t yield the year after. In our Karakalpakstan region nothing other than rice would grow.”
